As I continue exploring the latest in the DFW food scene, I recently discovered a local smash burger spot in Fort Worth. I glanced at a few photos on Yelp—though not closely enough—because what I expected to see and what I was actually served turned out to be very different.
I ordered the Backyard Burger with cheesy tots since they were sold out of fries. Ugh... I should have left then, but I was hungrier than a child who had been playing outside all day. I requested no bacon, but I was told, "No substitutions." I thought to myself, "What?" I didn't want to substitute anything; I just wanted to remove an item. With loud music playing and a growing line behind me, I didn’t have the energy to explain the obvious. So, when my burger arrived, I simply removed the bacon.
I have to say, while everything was seasoned, the presentation and assembly were a disaster. The bun-to-meat ratio was completely off, and the lettuce was chopped instead of left as whole leaves, making it difficult for the patties and tomatoes to stay in place. I eventually gave up and ate the patties without the greasy buns. And don’t even get me started on those awful tots—the semi-melted cheese ruined the entire dish.
This meal felt like something I would have eaten during my college days. It definitely had a low-budget vibe, but the price was NOT low. I cannot recommend this spot unless your taste buds are completely unresponsive or you enjoy mediocre food.
